Blaseball is an online, community-driven, fantasy baseball horror game.
Game, Branding, UI/UX
Year: 2021, 2022
Timeline: 6 Months
Team Size: 2
It’s also a free-to-play, text-based, fantasy baseball game. By watching the live simulated games, you can strategize with other players supporting your team to place bets on game outcomes and win the championship.
Something Else worked with Blaseball creators, The Game Band, to update the branding and develop the game for mobile.
The core gameplay loop begins by placing bets on upcoming games using in-game currency. The games play out in real time over the course of the season while you root for your team of choice.
Players work together via Discord to support their teams and vote on seasonal elections. These elections determine the next season’s rules, gameplay, and can inform how the player may bet.
The Game Band wanted to retain their black and white branding to reflect Blaseball's blunt, absurd humor. We refined the identity with updated typefaces that would scale well across different viewports, and added a bright cyan to add clarity to the user experience.
Despite its success and loyal following, Blaseball ended in 2023 due to the lack of resources. It continues to be celebrated for creating a strong player community during the peak months of the COVID-19 pandemic.
